Motorcycling and Health Issues
Unfortunately this riding season has brought with it a couple of motorcycle accidents. In addition to the one Ricky and I were in, two friends of Don Coombs were also involved in an accident recently. Fortunatly, there were no serious injuries. Also, a member of VROC that Tom Nelson knows was injured in an accident with a semi near Indianapolis. His injuries were more serious, requiring hospitalization. Don Coombs told me that one of his friends injured suffered from "compartment syndrome." I had never heard of this before. However, as motorcyclists we should be aware of this potentially serious condition that can occur after an accident.

In short, compartment syndrome occurs when fluid builds up in the compartments between muscles. Since the fluid has no place to go it can cause permanent damage to the affected limb.
We all lost a good friend this morning. Ralph "Banjoman" Barnard passed away.
He apparently had a heart attack while he was sleeping. He went riding yesterday
and all seemed fine. He visited one of his daughters, posted some messages on the CCUSA Forum and sent some e-mails. One of the e-mails was to me describing his day and the ride he took. I know he had a good life and loved his wife and children. He was a wonderful friend. I know we'll all miss
him.

His daugther Kara has requested a motorcade to accompany the funeral procession. She is requesting as many motorcycles as possible show up. Even those who are not members of the club and knew Ralph are encouraged to ride.

Please keep his family in your prayers.

"Attention Cruiser Club USA members...please contact the hotel that you have made your GOE reservations and using the confirmation number they have provided you, re-confirm your reservation. Our contact who we have worked with has now left and we have three people we need to work through.
This is just for reassurance that you still have your rooms. Also, when making your reservations, due to the confusion of the Honda Hoot being there as well, you MUST use the Group Code CRUZ to assure that you get a room and the rate we have negotiated. If you have any problems, please contact the National right away.

The only hotel that still has rooms available is the Days Inn North, I-75 North, 1-800-695-5800, Cruiser Club Members MUST use the code word "CRUZ". DO NOT USE the 1800 holiday inn number. The other hotels are full in the area for this event. And we only have 30 rooms left
and they will hold until June 1, 2000. I wouldn't advise waiting that late, because once the rooms are gone, there is nothing available within a
50-75 miles radius or further. Don't delay, book your rooms now and we will see you at Knoxville in June!!!!"

National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety
In February 2000 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine there was an article about the results of a working group comprising the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration and Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Together they put out a document called the "National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety." A draft of this document is available to the public. The draft covers many areas fo motorcycling safety (e.g., motorcycle safety courses, riding attitude, helment issues, etc.) It might be worth a look.
